Post the Beatitudes!

Filed under: Spirit — cody @ 12:55 pm

“For some reason, the most vocal Christians among us never mention the beatitudes. But, often with tears in their eyes, they demand that the Ten Commandments be posted in public buildings. And of course that’s Moses, not Jesus. I haven’t heard one of them demand that the Sermon on the Mount, the beatitudes, be posted anywhere.”

- Kurt Vonnegut

I could not resist posting this quote. What an incredible idea! I say we replace every publicly posted Ten Commandments with a copy of the Sermon on the Mount. Or better yet, take them all down and just live them instead.

  1. Look up the full quote from Kurt Vonnegut’s article on his site. However, let me go a bit further than Kurt …. just a “Modest Proposal”, mind you. Let Christians militate for the Beatitudes on public buildings. My suggestions: “Blessed are the merciful…” for all courthouses, “Blessed are the peacemakers”, on the Pentagon, “Blessed are the meek”, on the White House, “Blessed are the pure in heart”, on the Congress. Just a thot.
